[Latvia] The Representative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) Responsible for the Europe and the Middle East at the ELCL

On January 18th, the new Regional Representative of the ELCA for Europe and the Middle East, William Svenson, arrived for a visit in Riga. He met with several heads of commission of our Church as well as the deputy to the Archbishop, Pāvils Brūvers, to discuss missionary work, education, church social work, and church youth work with them.

The aim was to feel out possibilities of cooperation, the exchange of experiences and of information between both of the Churches. In the course of the discussions, several interesting ideas were created, e.g. the training of pastors in missionary work and the answers to conflicts in the parish.
William Svenson used the opportunity to get to know the Luther Academy and the history of its library better, to listen to the report of the coordinator for educational projects, Sandra Gintere, and to tour the Museum of Occupation. At the end of the day, the guest were received cordially in the Dubulti parish and by Dean Guntars Dimants.
On the following day, the representatives went to Tallinn with similar plans. This was William Svenson’s first visit in Latvia and certainly not the last. In the future, further possibilities of cooperation, especially with the North West Lower Michigan Synod, which is part of the ELCA and partner of the ELCL, will be felt out.
