[Czech Republic/Poland] 300th Anniversary of Jesus Church Cieszyn

Numerous Events Planned

In 2009, the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the foundation of Jesus Church in Cieszyn, one of the churches of mercy in Silesia, take place. The festivities are prepared by the Silesian Protestant Church A.C. in the Czech Republic and the Cieszyn parish of the Protestant-Augsburg Church of Poland in cooperation with other churches and church societies.

Jesus Church was an important centre of pietism during the first decades after its foundation and played a significant role in the early history of the Moravian Church. At the time of its foundation, it served the Protestants of Polish, German, and Czech nationality from a large vicinity. After the Edict of Tolerance in 1781, when new houses of prayer were able to be formed on the territority of the Austrian monarchy, Jesus Church became one of the most important centres of Austrian Protestantism. It was called "mother church of many countries". Nowadays, it is the only Prostestant church of mercy.

On May 21st and 22nd, 2009, an international scientific symposium will take place at the branch of the Silesian University in Cieszyn, and on May 23rd, there is a concert of the Janáček's Philharmonic Orchestra from Ostrava at Jesus Church, in which the Reformation Symphony by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy is being performed amongst others. On Sunday, May 24th, the anniversary worship service takes place. These main festivities are followed by concerts, exhibitions, art competitions, and other events that will extend until October 2010. Quite a number of publicatons are being prepared for release; a new documentary film about Jesus Church is in the works as well.
