The ECAC in Slovakia has a democratic church system that is based on the eligibility of all believers over 18 years of age to vote and on the parity of representation of the ordained and non-ordained church members in church institutions. Democratic elections are a tradition in Evangelical churches since the time of the Reformation.
The basic organizational unit is the congregation. Congregations are grouped into conferences (Seniorats) and conferences into districts. Districts form the ECAC.
The ECAC in Slovakia has 326 congregations, 14 conferences (seniorats), and 2 districts: the Western and the Eastern Districts of the ECAC in Slovakia.
Structure of the ECAC in Slovakia
The highest institution that meets at the three levels of the congregation, conference or district is the Assembly. The executive institution at each level is an elected presbytery. It is lead by a presidium – a statutory of the organizational unit. It is comprised of one ordained and one lay church member.
Members of presbyteries and presidiums (pastors, inspectors, seniors and bishops) are elected by the church members through a direct vote at the Assemblies. Representation of the ordained and the laity in the individual church institutions is based on parity, that is, an equal number of ordained and lay church members.
The highest, as well as legislative body of the ECAC in Slovakia, is the Synod of the ECAC, which meets at least once a year.
The basic governing document of the ECAC is the Constitution of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia (1993, as amended).
International contacts
The ECAC in Slovakia is one of the founding members of the Lutheran World Council (LWF), World Council of Churches (WCC) and Conference of European Churches (CEC) which have their headquarters in Geneva.
It cooperates with international partner organizations: Gustav-Adolf-Werk (GAW), Martin-Luther-Bund (MLB) and with the Association of Evangelical Churches in Europe (GEKE), with partner and sister Evangelical-Lutheran churches in Germany, Austria, Silesia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Russia, Sweden, as well as in the USA, Ethiopia and Malawi. It has begun inter-church dialogue with other churches as well, e.g. with the Lutheran Church of Finland.
The ECAC maintains lively contacts with Slovak evangelical congregations abroad – in Ilok (Croatia), Nadlak (Romania), Praha (Czech Republic), Budapest (Hungary) and Australia as well as with the Slovak ECAC in Serbia and the Slovak Zion Synod in the USA.
